Volleyball loses to Saint Mary's 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 19-25) at home on Wednesday evening

The Scots' Volleyball team hosted Saint Mary's College on Wednesday in a big MIAA match but came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision (21-25, 20-25, 19-25). The loss leaves Alma with a league record of 7-7 and 14-12 overall, while the Belles are now 7-7 in the MIAA and 13-12 in 2012.

Both teams are vying for a spot in the four-team MIAA Tournament next weekend and each team concludes the regular season with matches on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Alma hosts Albion College for Senior Night 2012 on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and then plays at Adrian College on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

"We just played like individuals tonight," said Scots Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "It was disappointing to play like this at the end of the season and now we have a fight to the finish for the tournament."

Alma had very few leads in any set this evening, as after a 13-12 advantage in the first, the Belles never trailed again en route to a 25-21 win. The second set showed promise for the home team as they led early and as much as 9-5. However, Saint Mary's reeled off the next five and went on to the 25-20 victory. The final set was tied 8-8 before the Belles opened up and eventually won 25-19.

So. OH Taryn McGrew (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow) led the team with eight kills, while Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) paced the Scots with 20 assists and added 12 digs. Jr. OH/DS Kelly Maise (Northville, Mich./Northville) had a team-high 17 digs and Sr. OH/RS Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles) was next with 14.
