On Friday evening, the Scots' Volleyball team hosted #2 ranked Hope College and dropped a MIAA contest by a score of 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 19-25) at Art Smith Arena. The loss put Alma at 6-6 in the league and 13-11 overall, while the Flying Dutch improved to 12-1 in the MIAA and 24-2 for the 2012 season.
"I thought the team played hard and stayed consistent through the entire match to challenge a very strong Hope team," said Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "We didn't get down on ourselves, which we have done in the past. Tomorrow's match versus Trine on the road will be huge match for us."
The match was much more competitive than the 3-0 decision would lead you to believe. Alma pushed the Flying Dutch in all three sets, only to come up short in the end. In set one, the Scots held a 14-11 lead at one point, while in set two, Hope only led 21-19 before winning by four. Hope led the whole way in set three, but the Scots trimmed the advantage to 20-18 before succumbing to the Flying Dutch.
For the match, Jr. MH Rebecca Trosper (Plano, Tex./Lutheran North) led the team with six kills, while Jr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) was next with five. Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason) paced the Scots with 15 assists and Jr. DS/L Jaycee Cole (Alma, Mich./Alma) had a team-high 13 digs.
Alma travels to Trine University on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. match against the Thunder.
