On Saturday, the Alma College Volleyball team defeated the visiting Olivet Comets by a score of 3-0 (33-31, 25-15, 25-17), snapping a three-match losing streak. The Scots are now 13-9 on the season and 6-4 in the MIAA, while Olivet fell to 5-14 in 2012 and 2-7 in the league.
"I am very glad that we were able to pull out this win before our bye week," remarked Alma Head Coach Sarah Dehring. "It was a long, tough September for us both mentally and physically with all the travel we had had in our schedule. The girls need a little break and this will be a good stretch for us to reenergize ourselves for the final regular season push."
The first set was as crazy as you will ever see as the two teams were tied 17 different times before the Scots ultimately came away with the 33-31 victory. In addition, the Scots fought back from six points down (18-12) midway through the set to put the crazy action in motion.
Alma used the momentum from the first set and ultimately settled down and came away with 25-15 and 25-17 wins in the final two sets for the 3-0 victory.
So. OH Kayla Muxlow (Brown City, Mich./Brown City) led Alma with 13 kills, while Sr. OH/RS Katie Bourbonnais (Niles, Mich./Niles) and Jr. MH Lea Klooster (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) were next with nine and eight kills respectively.
Assists were led by Jr. S Erika VanHavel (Mason, Mich./Mason), who had 36, while Sr. DS Megan Ballantyne (Allen Park, Mich./Southgate Anderson) paced the team with 14 digs. Jr. OH/DS Kelly Maise (Northville, Mich./Northville) contributed nine digs and seven kills in the win.
The Scots now have a much needed rest as they don't play another match until October 16, when they host Calvin College at Art Smith Arena. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
