Mackenzie Smith and Ann Kennedy named First Team All-MIAA Women's Soccer, while Taryn Handyside and Agatha Weddle earn Second Team honors
On Monday, the MIAA announced their 2012 All-League teams for Women's Soccer and Alma College was well represented. Jr. D Ann Kennedy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and So. M Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) each earned First Team honors. In addition, Jr. MF Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) and Fr. MF Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) were named to the Second Team.
Kennedy was the anchor of Alma's backline, great communicator, organized our defensive shape. Ann came with countless timely tackles, including game-saving tackles. One of the best 1v1 defenders in the league, and asked to do so more frequently than any other center back in the league. Very good combination player when she first comes in possession.
Overall Stats: Started all 20 games, often playing 90 minutes.
MIAA Regular Season Stats: Started all 16 games, often playing 90 minutes.
Smith really came into her own this year after the graduation of last year's forwards. She is a dangerous 1v1 player, often attracting 2 or 3 defenders. Very skilled on the ball and a goal scorer with both feet. Without a doubt our most effective primary attacker. Combines well with others after committing defenders. Smith led Alma in all major statistical categories including goals, assists and points.
Weddle started every match this season and is a very active and mobile center midfielder, covers a tremendous amount of ground. She is a terrific tackler and great in the air. She has a knack to score goals and a real threat on set pieces. She is a good link up player and one of the hardest working players in the MIAA. Clutch performer. Alma's second leading goal scorer for the season as a true midfielder.
