On a warm but wet Tuesday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak when they defeated host Saint Mary's College by a score of 2-0. The Scots now have a league mark of 8-4-2 and 11-5-2 overall, while the Belles walked off the pitch with an MIAA record of 8-4-1 and 11-4-2 in 2012.
"The girls responded really well and got off to a fast start today," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "They played like they had something to prove and pressed the issue throughout the first half."
The Scots jumped on the Belles this afternoon with So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) scoring two goals in the first four minutes. At 54 seconds, Smith dribbled to the left side and was able to get the ball past SMC GK Chanler Rosenbaum. Then, at 3:21, Smith scored on a header off of a cross from Jr. M Taryn Handyside (Montrose, Mich./Hill-McCloy) and Alma led 2-0.
Saint Mary's outshot the Scots by a total margin of 15-13 on the afternoon, including six to five in shots on goal. Alma was led by Smith's two shots on goal, while three other players notched one shot on net in the win - Fr. M Danielle Partyka (Washington, Mich./Bishop Foley), Fr. D Allison Smith (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) and Fr. M Agatha Weddle (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern).
Jr. GK Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) recorded six saves to earn her third shutout of the 2012 season.
Alma is now down to their final two games of the regular season and have two more road contests ahead of them. The first one is at Albion College on Saturday afternoon beginning at Noon. The Scots will then close out the regular season on Wednesday afternoon against Trine University at 3:00 p.m.
