Scots Women's Soccer knocks off Saint Mary's 2-1 on Saturday afternoon

On a cool and blustery Saturday afternoon, the Scots Women's Soccer team hosted Saint Mary's College in an important MIAA tilt and earned a tight 2-1 victory. Alma is now 6-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in the league, while the Belles fell to 2-1 in the MIAA and 4-1-1 in 2012, as they suffered their first loss.

"Saint Mary's has continually improved over the past couple of years and there is a reason they came into our match today undefeated," commented Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We tried a lot of different things with different players and I have a lot of faith in this roster."

Fr. F Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) scored an unassisted goal at the 7:14 mark of the first half, giving the Scots a 1-0 lead. The Belles responded with their own goal at 23:52 and the two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1. The only goal of the second half proved to be the decisive one for Alma, when Fr. M/F Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) hit the back of the net at 82:16, assisted by Jr. M/D Autumn Root (Haslett, Mich./Haslett). It gave the home team the 2-1 lead and victory.

Three players led the Scots with two shots on goal for the afternoon - Weddle, Wilson and So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) - while So. GK Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) tended net and recorded four saves in earning the win.

The schedule does not get any easier for the Scots as Hope College comes to Alma on Tuesday afternoon for another big league game. Start time at Scotland Yard is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
