Eight minutes and 29 seconds into overtime proved to be the perfect time for the Alma College Women's Soccer team to score a goal and notch a key MIAA win on a cool Wednesday afternoon. The game-winner came from Fr. Kelly Wilson (Midland, Mich./Dow) on an assist from So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) and gave the Scots a 2-1 victory over Calvin College at Scotland Yard.
"Morgan was fantastic today in net for us, very clean," said Alma Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "Victories don't come easy against Calvin and this game was no different. We were really exposed in some areas this afternoon and it proves that we have a lot of work to do moving forward."
The game was scoreless for the majority of the first half although each team had their chances. Smith finally hit the back of the net at the 37:18 mark on an unassisted goal that gave Alma a 1-0 lead that they took into halftime. Calvin had six shots on goal to Alma's five in the first 45 minutes.
To their credit, the Knights pressed hard in the second half and put constant pressure on the Scots throughout. They finally tied the game 1-1 at 71:20 when Kelly Koets beat So. GK Morgan Waier (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) for the score. For the half, Calvin notched seven shots on goal, while the Scots had two.
Smith led the Scots with three shots on goal for the afternoon, while Wilson had two and three other players added one. Waier had 12 saves in the win in a game that saw Alma improve to 5-1-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the MIAA. Calvin is now 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the MIAA.
Alma next plays on Saturday when they host Saint Mary's University in a MIAA contest beginning at Noon at Scotland Yard.
