On Sunday in St. Louis, the Scots ended a two-game trip with a game against host Webster University. Alma earned a 2-1 overtime victory to gain a split of the weekend games - they lost 2-1 to nationally ranked Washington University on Saturday. The 1-1 Scots will now take on perennial national power University of California Santa Cruz on Tuesday at Scotland Yard, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
"We came out and really took it to them for 65 minutes, but they were resilient and bounced back to even the score," said Scots Head Coach Jeff Hosler. "We showed great determination to take back the momentum and get the game winner. Kailey Vlug was the difference in overtime. This trip was good for us as we learned some valuable lessons and a lot about our girls. I am excited about this group and our potential. We need to focus on getting better every day."
After a scoreless first half, the Scots scored first when So. F Mackenzie Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel) hit the back of the net, assisted by Fr. M/F Agatha Weddle (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern). Webster deadlocked the game with a tally by Ally Nikolaus and the two teams went into overtime tied at 1-1.
So. M/F Kailey Vlug (Coopersville, Mich./Coopersville) notched the game winner for the Scots as they came out of the game with a hard-fought victory.
Overall, Alma outshot the hosts by a margin of nine to two in shots on goal, led by Smith's three on net. So. GK Rachel Doptis (Macomb Township, Mich./Macomb Dakota) had one save for Alma in front of the net.
