On Saturday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Basketball team hosted Kalamazoo College in an MIAA encounter at Art Smith Arena. The Scots defeated the Hornets by a score of 65-44 to earn a win in their league opener and are now 1-3 overall on the season. Kalamazoo dropped to 0-2 in the MIAA and 0-4 in 2012-13.
"This win was a big one for us because we put two halves together," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "Instead of doing a scouting report on Kzoo, we scouted ourselves and that opened our eyes a lot. But it also made us recognize the one thing we were missing and that was confidence.
"We came out with it tonight and maintained it. We had everyone contributing and filling roles. We did a nice job of taking care of the basketball offensively but applying pressure defensively. Our bench was big for us today. Depth is definitely a positive for us. We will continue to gain confidence and take it one game at a time. But, it is nice to have that first win under our belt."
The Scots led 31-25 at halftime as Fr. G Kassidi Adams (Montrose, Mich./Montrose) led the team with 10 points. Alma shot 33% (12-36) in the first 20 minutes, while the Hornets finished the half at 47% (10 of 21) and both teams downed three from beyone the arc. Adams hit a three-pointer at the 14:25 mark to take a 9-8 lead and the Scots would never trail again in the game.
Kalamazoo cut Alma's lead to 36-33 on a three-pointer at the 14:19 mark of the second half. However, the Scots would go on a 23-4 run over the next 9:53 and took a 59-37 lead on a Adams free throw with 4:26 remaining in the game.
The closest the Hornets could come after that was a 17-point deficit and the Scots were able to hold on and walk off the court a 19-point margin of victory.
Adams led the Scots with a career-high 20 points and added two blocked shots defensively. So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming) had 15 points and three assists, while Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) contributed six points and 10 boards, while Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) finished with seven assists and four steals.
Alma continues their season on Wednesday night when they host MIAA foe Calvin College at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
