Women's Hoops loses to host Defiance College 80-69 on Wednesday evening

On Wednesday evening, the Alma Women's Basketball team traveled to Defiance College (Ohio) and dropped an 80-69 non-league contest. The Scots dropped to 0-3 on the young season, while the host Yellow Jackets improved to 1-3 in 2012-13.

"Well, another tough loss as again we did not come out of the gate ready to play," said Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "We dug a hole for ourselves that we could not escape. We had a better second half but until we can put together two halves, we won't be successful."

To hammer home Coach Brown's point, the Scots never held a lead in tonight's contest, falling behind 15-5 in the first 5:20 of the game. Alma fought back and cut the lead to 21-18 at the 7:55 mark on a three-pointer by So. G Mallory Pruett (Ishpeming, Mich./Ishpeming). However, a 21-4 Yellow Jacket run over the next 4:30 led to the home team leading at halftime by a mark of 45-31.

Defiance was determined not let Alma back into the game and three times led by 17 points during the final 20 minutes. The closest the Scots could get was 58-49 on a jumper by Sr. F Olivia Bishop (Haslett, Mich./Haslett) with 8:00 remaining in the contest. But an answering three-pointer by the Yellow Jackets squashed the momentum and Defiance ultimately came away with the 11-point victory.

For the game, the Scots shot 41% from the floor (24 of 59), including two of six from beyond the arc, while the Yellow Jackets finished at 48% as they converted 27 of 56 shots and were 10 of 16 in three pointers.

Alma was led by Jr. F Mary Schlicher (Lewiston, Mich./Johannesburg-Lewiston) and Jr. F Bailey Gooding (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord), who each finished the night with 10 points. Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) had nine points and a team-high nine assists and Pruett added nine points. Schlicher also had six rebounds in the loss.

Alma will host MIAA foe Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon in the MIAA opener for both teams, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
