On Friday afternoon, the Alma College Women's Basketball team opened up their 2012-13 season with a game against St. Mary's College (Minn.) at a tournament at North Central College (Ill.). The Scots got off to a rough start and could not recover, losing the opener by a score of 67-36. Alma will play host North Central on Saturday afternoon.
"Our first half was not good as we allowed them to come out on a 7-0 run in the first 90 seconds and we didn't recover confidence wise," remarked Alma Head Coach Keisha Brown. "Offensively in the first half we weren't hitting shots and didn't get many second chances and they were transitioning well.
"First game jitters really bit us in the butt to start but we did much better in the second half. Danielle Hicks really gave us a boost in the second half and the whole team played better. But, we dug ourselves a hole that we could not get out of and that was the difference."
St. Mary's carried the early lead all through the first half and went into the break with a commanding 43-14 advantage. Alma played a much better second half as they were outscored just 24-22 in the final 20 minutes.
Sr. F Danielle Hicks (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) paced the Scots with seven points and seven rebounds, while Fr. G Courtney Waara (Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee) was next with six points on the afternoon. Fr. F Logan Rowell (Cass City, Mich./Cass City) added three blocked shots and three rebounds for Alma.
The Scots will play host North Central on Saturday afternoon beginning at 5:00 p.m.
