Scots open up NCAA Softball Regionals with a comeback 6-5 victory over Denison University

On Thursday afternoon, the Alma College Scots began tournament play against Denison University in the third game of the NCAA Division III Regionals at their home field of Scots' Park.

Coming back from a 4 run deficit, the Scots pulled through and won the game 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"They key is to win that first game," Alma's head coach Denny Griffin said. "Things were down and just not going our way but the kids didn't give up they just kept pounding and pounding and got some better at bats down the stretch. Anytime you can win in the bottom of the seventh, the way we did, is pretty good."

Denison University led the game scoring in the third inning while the Scots remained scoreless until the fifth. So. Meghan Edwards (Morton Grove, Ill./Loyola Academy) earned the RBI for the Big Red's first run, scored by Jr. Rosie Glaser (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep).

"Our pitchers threw well and our hitters did a great job," Denison's head coach Tiffany Ozbun said. "Some days it's just not your day. Alma's a great team and I think we beat them in every category except for the final score."

The Scots trailed for the majority of the game but turned it around late in the 7th inning whenJr. Erin Rodes (Plymouth, Mi./Plymouth) singled to centerfield bringing Jr. Rachel Bowker (Essexville, Mi./Garber) and Fr. Lea Lusk (Columbiaville, Mi./Lakeville) home. Coming up to the plate with a tied score, Sr. Emily Ross (Buchanan, Mi./Buchanan) singled and earned an RBI withJr. Amanda Schneider (New Baltimore, Mi./ Anchor Bay) as the winning run.

"I was just saying hit the ball, hit the ball. I didn't care if the run came in," Ross said. "I knew if I got on we still had two outs and Becca [DeWyse] coming up to the plate would get the RBI to come in so I wasn't worried."

Alma College will move on in the winner's bracket to play the winner of game #4 on Friday at 4 pm. Denison will play the loser of this game, Friday at noon.
