On a wet and dreary Saturday night in Holland, Michigan, the Alma College Men's Soccer team took on host Hope College in a MIAA contest and dropped a 4-1 decision. With the loss, the Scots are now 6-8-1 overall this season and 2-6-1 in the league, while the Flying Dutchmen improved to 6-3 in the MIAA and 9-5 for the 2012 campaign.
A bad stretch of about 11 minutes in the first half doomed the Scots on this evening as Hope scored three goals in that time period that proved to be decisive. The first tally came at 13:12 and was followed by goals at 16:43 and 22:38 as the home team took that 3-0 lead into halftime.
Alma showed no quit however and cut the disadvantage to 3-1 at 52:04, when So. M/F Michael Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) scored from just outside the 18 on an assist from Fr. M Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston). However, that is the closest the Scots would get as Hope scored the final game of the season at 73:28 for the ultimate 4-1 advantage.
The Flying Dutchmen outshot the Scots 19-12, including 10-5 in shots on goal, on the evening. Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) stopped six shots in the game, while Smith and Fr. M Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) each had two shots on goal. Fr. M Chad Buitentius (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had the other shot on net for the Scots in the loss.
On Tuesday evening at Kalamazoo College, the Scots will continue the 2012 season and the team will host Adrian College next Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard.
