Alma Men's Soccer wins MIAA opener 1-0 on a late goal at Albion
The Alma Men's Soccer team began MIAA play on Wednesday afternoon when they traveled to Albion and came away with a dramatic 1-0 victory with a goal in the 88th minute. The win was the team's fourth in a row to improve their record to 4-1 on the season, while Albion is now 1-4 in 2012.
"This was a good way to start conference play as we were sharp the first 15 minutes and seemed to take control of the match," said Scots Head Coach Josh Oakley. "However, we really struggled at times to keep things on the level we wish to play for 90 minutes. We let Albion run at us in the second half and they had the lion share of possession. That said, our team found a way to win an MIAA game on the road. We can be, and we will need to be much better going forward."
After a scoreless first half saw Alma have the better opportunities, the Britons carried the action for a good portion of the second 45 minutes. However, it was the Scots that would finally get on the board with a goal that would prove to be the game-winner.
Sr. M Ryan Kovach (Port Huron, Mich./Port Huron) hit the back of the net at the 87:38 mark on an assist by So. D/M Joonas Kotka (Tallinn, Estonia) for the 1-0 advantage. For the afternoon, the Scots had four total shots on goal, with Jr. F Matteo Capicchioni (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and So. M/F Nathan Brown (Midland, Mich./Midland) joining Kovach and Kotka.
In the net, Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) recorded two saves in the win at Albion, and now has three consecutive shutout victories. After five games, he has a goals against average of just 0.38.
