The Scots Men's Soccer team opened up their 2012 home schedule on Thursday afternoon when hosted Andrews University at Scotland Yard. Alma defeated the Cardinals by a score of 4-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season, while the visitors are now 1-2. The Scots next play at Benedictine (Ill.) on Saturday evening, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
"We started very slowly today as we tinkered with the system in an attempt to prepare for the looming conference opener at Albion next week," said Alma Head Coach Josh Oakley. "That cannot be an excuse however, for how poorly we passed the ball in the first half. Our tempo and rhythm was nowhere near satisfactory. On the positive side, the people scoring goals today are exactly the guys we need to be around the net all season long. We will continue to learn and build as we prepare for Benedictine."
Alma took an early lead as Fr. M Matt Sovis (Williamston, Mich./Williamston) scored unassisted at the 3:25 mark for the 1-0 advantage. So. M/F Michael Smith (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Central Catholic) made the score 2-0 with an unassisted tally at 28:03 and Jr. F Matteo Capicchioni (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) gave the Scots a 3-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 34:57.
The Scots and Cardinals played to a scoreless tie for most of the second half until Sovis tallied his second goal of the game at 83:25 on an assist from Fr. M Julian Birge (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) for the final 4-0 advantage. Sovis finished the game with eight shots on goal for the Scots, while Fr. F Zach Vandeveer (Elk Rapids, Mich./Elk Rapids) added four shots on goal.
Jr. GK Graham Wallace (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) improved his record to 2-1 as he had two saves in today's victory.
