The Alma College Men's Basketball team hosted Baldwin Wallace on Saturday and defeated the visitors 75-73 in a game that came down to the wire at Art Smith Arena. The Scots improved to 2-4 on the season while the Yellow Jackets fell to 3-2 in the early 2012-13 campaign.
"A big win for our program and hopefully our confidence moving forward," remarked Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "The nice thing is we still have a long way to go on so many things, but the effort was there tonight. They are a very talented team and our picked second in one of the top conferences in division three."
The game started out close and stood at 9-6 in favor of Baldwin Wallace at 15:09 when Fr. F DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) hit a jumper. The Yellow Jackets then went on a 17-6 run over the next six minutes to take a lead of 26-13 with 9:39 left in the half.
However, the Scots kept fighting and cut the deficit to one at 32-31, on a three-point play by Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) at the 3:25 mark. The Yellow Jackets responded and walked off the court with a 39-35 halftime advantage.
Alma began the second half on a 7-0 run, culminated by a Law jumper at 17:57, that gave the home team a 42-39 lead. The teams were then destined to play a tight contest the remainder of the way. B-W had the advantage on several occasions over the next seven minutes until Alma finally took somewhat control of the contest.
When Sr. F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) hit a jumper at 10:27, it gave the Scots a 60-59 lead and they would not trail again. The Scots increased their lead to nine points at one point, but the Yellow Jackets fought back and cut it to 74-72 on two free throws with 3:28 left.
Both teams would struggle to score in that final segment and it came down to one final Yellow Jackets possession. With the game at 75-73, B-W took the ball out of a timeout with 12 seconds left but were not able to get a shot off as a scrum on the floor ensued and the buzzer went off giving Alma the victory.
Law led all Alma scorers with 23 points and also added three assists and three steals, while Silverthorn was next with 18 points and he notched a team-high four assists. Beckman finished with 12 points, while Sr. F Brian Sheridan (New Lothrop, Mich./New Lothrop) had a productive day with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Alma is off until next Saturday when they travel to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the Yeomen. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
