Alma Men's Basketball is defeated on the road by Defiance College 76-60

The Scots' Men's Basketball team took on host Defiance College in the second game of a women-men doubleheader on Wednesday night and were defeated by a score of 76-60. Alma is now 1-4 on the 2012-13 season, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-2 on the young campaign.

"We did a nice job of battling in the first half, especially at the end when we cut it to just two points," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "The start of the second half was terrible. A couple of turnovers, a couple missed shots and they capitalized. It seemed like they went up 10 points immediately in the half.

"We played pretty hard, but we still have a long ways to go defensively. I'm waiting for a game where we start making shots, but when you don't get enough stops, it is hard to make shots playing half court basketball."

The Scots had a couple early leads with the last being at 11-9 when Sr. F Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) hit a three-pointer at the 16:17 mark. Alma trailed by just two points at 23-21 with 10:53 remaining in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets were able to extend their advantage to 37-27 at 3:36.

Alma finished the first frame on an 8-2 run and cut the deficit to 39-37, the score at halftime, when Sr. F Brian Sheridan (New Lothrop, Mich./New Lothrop) hit a jumper with 52 seconds left.

The second half did not go well for the visitors as Defiance began the frame on a 15-0 run in the first six minutes and increased their lead to 20 points at the 11:45 mark. The closest Alma could get the remainder of the way was at 65-52, when Silverthorn hit a three with 8:02 left in the game. However, the Yellow Jackets were not to be denied and closed out the 16-point victory.

Silverthorn led the Scots with 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Fr. F DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) was next with nine points and seven boards. Fr. C Charley Helmer (Six Lakes, Mich./Montabella) added nine points and five rebounds, while Jr. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) dished out three assists.

As a team, Alma shot 35% overall (20 of 57), including eight of 27 from three-point land, while the Yellow Jackets finished at 44%, converting 27 of 62 shots. They hit 10 of 24 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Scots will next play on Saturday afternoon, when they host Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) at Art Smith Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
