Scots Men's Basketball drops 71-43 decision in exhibition against Division I Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne on Monday night

On Monday night, the Alma College Men's Basketball team opened their season with an exhibition game at Division I Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). The Scots fell to the Mastodons by a score of 71-43 on a night that saw the visitors struggle shooting from the floor and committing too many turnovers.

"Getting the opportunity to play a Division 1 school is a great experience for our guys, even though from a speed, strength, and athleticism standpoint, they do some things we just can't simulate in practice," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "Both teams set offensive basketball back a few notches with the shooting display tonight, but we did some things defensively that were pretty good, and our rebounding, which was a huge concern last year, was better tonight.

"I thought we really settled down in the second half and held our own for the most part. The first half was sometimes men versus boys, but I am proud of how we adjusted."

IPFW never trailed in the game, but the led by one at 4-3 just three and a half minutes into the game, before the Mastodons ran off a 22-2 run over the next eight minutes to lead 26-5. The first-half lead grew to as many as 25 when the Scots went into the locker room with a 38-13 disadvantage.

The Scots could not get the second half deficit under 20 points and and both teams used their entire benches over the final 10 minutes of the game, and IPFW completed the 71-43 win.

Three Alma players - Sr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd), Fr. F DJ Beckman (Shelby, Mich./Shelby) and Jr. F Isiah Law (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) - each scored seven points, while Fr. C Ivy Johnson (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) pulled down seven rebounds for the Scots.

Alma begins their 2012-13 campaign on Friday, November 16, when they take on Capital (Ohio) University in the Wheaton College (Ill.) Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
