Scots Men's Hoops fall to Hope College 103-78
The Alma Men's Basketball team began MIAA play by hosting #12 Hope College on Wednesday evening at Art Smith Arena. The Scots lost to the Flying Dutchmen by a score of 103-78, dropping them to 0-1 in the league and 4-8 overall, while Hope improved to 11-1 and 1-0 in 2011-12.
"Not much went right for us tonight and we will watch the film and get better," said Scots Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "The nice thing about the schedule now is that we don't have much time to dwell. It is time to move on and get ready for Trine on Saturday."
The Scots came out with a lot of energy and went toe to toe with the talented Flying Dutchmen through the first ten minutes of the first half. The home team tied the game at 21-21 when Jr. G Greg Silverthorn (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd) hit a lay-up with 10:25 remaining.

However, Hope was able to go on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes that they parlayed into a 48-34 advantage at halftime. The Scots shot 50% in the first 20 minutes (4-11 in three-pointers), while the Flying Dutchmen were an impressive 56% from the field (20 of 36).
The hosts faced an uphill battle in the second frame, and after cutting the deficit to 53-41 on a Sr. F Tommy Erickson (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) jumper at 17:45, the Flying Dutchmen put their feet on the pedal and took control. Hope used 68% second half shooting to extend their lead to as much as 30 and keep the Scots at bay, walking off with the league road win.
Alma finished the contest hitting 14 three-pointers, led by Sr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, Mich./CC-Crystal), who was good on five of eight attempts. Schneider led the team with 15 total points, while So. G Brandon Krause (Sanford, Mich./Meridian) added 12 points.
The Scots next play on Saturday afternoon at Trine University. The MIAA tilt is scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
