Alma Men's Basketball beat Indiana University Northwest 103-95
On Saturday evening, the Scots Men's Basketball team hosted NAIA Indiana University Northwest at Art Smith Arena and defeated the RedHawks by a score of 103-95. The entertaining game gave Alma a 3-6 record on the season, while IUNW dropped to 1-12 on the 2011-12 campaign.
"Tonight was good as we needed to get a win and it was nice to shoot the ball well again," said Alma Head Coach Sam Hargraves. "They gave us the three point shots and we took advantage of it, that is kind of the team we are going to be. Also, it was nice to have our crowd really get behind us as the game went down to the wire. The support is great for the guys."
Chris Williamson led the Scots with 20 points, including four three-pointers in the win over IUNW on Saturday
On Saturday, the Scots participated in a very fun game to watch against a very athletic IUNW squad. The two teams saw the lead exchange hands six times and tied 10 times in the first half. The Scots took a 52-49 advantage into halftime as both teams shot the ball very well in the first half. The RedHawks shot 56% in the initial 20 minutes (22 of 39), while Alma came in at 46% (20-44), including 10 of 24 from beyond the three-point arc.
In the second half, Alma showed poise and determination by pushing back the RedHawks at every opportunity. Twice IUNW was able to tie the score, but the Scots never gave up the lead. The RedHawks tied the score for the last time at 70-70 on a dunk with 10:32 remaining in the game.
Tommy Erickson had a double-double for the Scots with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win over IUNW
From that point on, the Scots took control, even though the RedHawks were a threat to the end. Alma was able to grab a ten-point lead at 95-85 when Erickson was good with a tip-in with 1:58 remaining in the game. IUNW cut the lead to four with 19 seconds left, but the Scots were able to hold on for the victory.
