On Saturday, the Alma College football team hosted their annual intra-squad scrimmage at Bahlke Field, the first under new Head Coach Greg Pscodna. Under sunny skies and comfortable temperatures, the Scots' offense ran a total of 115 plays against the white uniformed defense. No real score was kept but big plays were made on both sides of the ball.
"I thought the defense did a real nice job of getting after us and were very aggressive all afternoon," said Pscodna. "We did some good things offensively as well, but need to work on our offensive line play and the passing game. But today was good for us and now we have two weeks to get ready for our opener here against Heidelberg."
Over the course of the two hour scrimmage, the defense was able to put pressure on the quarterbacks and finished with 11 sacks on the afternoon. They were also able to intercept two passes, notch eight passes broken up and also recovered two fumbles.
"We did a good job of putting pressure on the quarterback all during the scrimmage after they really took it to us yesterday in practice," said Defensive Coordinator Nate Jensen. "There were a lot of good things out there coverage wise as well, and our defensive seniors really led the way for us."
Offensively, Jr. QB Robert Feeman connected on five of nine passes for 86 yards and completed a 40-yard touchdown to Jr. WR Joey Jerisk, who led the team with five receptions. So. RB Adam Nelson carried the ball three times for 51 yards, including a team-long 29-yarder, while So. RB Bryan Wonski ran for 38 yards on eight carries.
On defense, Sr. DB Luke Kanine had five tackles with a pass break-up, while Fr. LB Al Lesperance finished with five tackles and two quarterback sacks. Nine other defensive players recorded sacks on the afternoon and Jr. LB Clayton Every notched two tackles for loss. Fr. DB Aaron Davis added four tackles in his first collegiate action.
The Scots open the 2012 season on Saturday, September 1, when they host Heidelberg University at Bahlke Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
