Mike Hanson has been with Alma College Athletics since the 2008-09 athletics year.  Hanson came to the Scots from the National Basketball Association’s Portland Trail Blazers where he served as the Executive Director of Communications.  Hanson has also worked for the Florida Panthers of the NHL, and the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Houston Oilers, and Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. 

He is recognized as being one of the very few people to ever be the head of the Public Relations (PR)/Communications department in three major professional sports.  At the time of Hanson’s stint with the Patriots he was the youngest Public Relations Director in the NFL.

Hanson’s responsibilities as Sports Information Director include doing stats for all sports, writing game stories, being the main game day contact for every sport, setting up all media requests, maintaining the athletic website, as well as other duties as needed.

He also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director for Game Management.  His duties include the handling and hospitality of all referees along with opposing coaches and players.  In addition, Hanson is responsible for selecting and training all student workers for athletic events. During the 2011-12 season, he spearheaded the hosting of two MHSAA high school basketball regionals, an NCAA Softball Regional and the 2012 MHSFCA high school football all-star game.

Mike is a 1989 graduate of the University of Minnesota where he double-majored in Communications and Political Science. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minnesota. He is currently married to Jana Hanson and has two children, Zach (15) and Sydney (12).
